A native of Wisconsin, Mike Stone has been a touring guitarist and studio musician for a number of acts, including playing with Peter Criss (KISS). Stone began working with Queensrÿche at some point in 2002, as a recommendation from Queensrÿche's manager, Lars Sorenson. Wilton, Jackson, and Rockenfield were working on music for the band's next album, and Stone was brought in to help facilitate that process and provide ideas, as Queensrÿche was without a primary songwriter.

The initial relationship was short-lived, as guitarist Chris DeGarmo returned to the fold in late 2002, and the band appeared to be on the cusp of a reunion and had planned a New Year's Eve show in Anchorage, Alaska. Ultimately, DeGarmo didn't make the show, and Mike Stone was called to fill-in, making his live debut with Queensrÿche, running through a set of the band's hits and material from Q2k.

After the aborted "reunion" show, DeGarmo continued to work with the band through early 2003, but he eventually departed again during the recording process of Tribe, and Mike Stone came back to work with Queensrÿche full time, contributing one track, "Losing Myself." He has been with the band ever since, and played a key writing role with producer/songwriter Jason Slater on Operation: Mindcrime II, Queensrÿche's 2006 studio release.
